The students and employees, both teaching & non-teaching personnel, of Baybay City Senior High School are encouraged to bring their own re-usable water bottle or tumbler inside the school premises starting Monday, September 5, 2022.
The coordinator, Ms. Elia Maury Jadina from the Academic Track said that the school seeks to promote the importance of controlling the accumulation of single use plastic wastes in the school's premises especially non-re-usable commercial plastic mineral and distilled water bottles as well as encouraging everyone to appreciate the concept of sustainable management of natural resources like clean freshwater.
Stanley Guevarra in his July 2022 article “The Face of Plastic” published in ateneo.edu/news, highlighted that the Philippines is considered as the third-largest contributor to plastic waste worldwide, contributing to an estimated 0.75 million metric tons of ocean plastic every year.
According to Ms. Jadena, “We are showing an example of the minimalistic way of living, because in reality, recycling our wastes should be our only last resort, given the reality that it is quite difficult to ban the use of plastics. Imagine, a small plastic bottle would take about 450 years to decompose and if each of our students would bring commercial non-reusable plastic water bottles every day, what will happen to our environment?” Ms. Jadena reiterated.
The initiative to encourage everyone in BCSHS to bring their own re-usable bottle water or tumbler is a good thing to help contribute in the reduction of plastic waste.
The school also believes that through this initiative, everyone in the school will be more responsible in protecting our environment. On the other hand, this is also another way to help keep the students well-hydrated while in school.
Ms. Jadena also extended her message to all BCSHS Students, “As school eco-friendly school coordinator, I hope that through this advocacy everyone will take part and realize their crucial role in environmental protection. This is our simple way of giving back a good favor to mother nature, our baby steps towards advocating for innovative environmental education. In YES-O, I am much thankful that our active student members are very participative in the promotion of awareness activities. I hope for the success of this activity with the help and support of the students but also by the faculty, staff and the school administration.”
The coordinator and her team also encouraged everyone in BCSHS to show their support by posting photos or short videos of their re-usable water bottle or tumbler by using the hashtag #IHeartMyTumblerChallenge #BaybayCitySeniorHighSchool #ExcellenceIsOurCulture and the team will randomly choose your photos and will be featured here on our OFFICIAL Facebook Page.
